Scandinavia’s broadband ambitions

A survey recently showed that Scandinavian countries are ranked among the top ten countries in terms of the quality and reach of their networks. On October 16, Finland made Internet services a legal right when it announced that all citizens are legally entitled to a minimum internet connection of 1 Mb/s. This should be ready for July next year. The goal, however, is for 100 Mb/s lines to be unrolled across the country by 2015. Likewise, Sweden, who already has the highest quality broadband in Europe recently announced that they want to provide 100 Mb/s broadband connections to 90% of homes and businesses by 2020. The British Government's plans for universal broadband access which was laid out in the Digital Britain report, published earlier this year,  said it planned to provide a broadband service to all UK households, at speeds of at least 2 Mb/s by 2012. Britain was at the forefront for a long time, but it seems like we will have some catching up to do for the next-generation of network demands.
